Day 24- Baiona to Vigo

Sept 7 –

‘We are the hunger
We are the fire
Runners and gunners
Out on the wire
Pushin' the limits
Higher and higher
Gonna show
Show the world’
- Matt Beilis

So this morning, I headed out on my own to Vigo. Luca’s taking things slowly, and Christian’s toe is really bothering him. There is a huge sports store in Vigo and Christian needs to switch out his shoes. So he’s going to take a bus into Vigo to find new shoes so he can continue the Camino. Both Luca and Christian will take a rest day there. For me, I’m walking the trail to Vigo and will meet them this afternoon when I arrive. Todays journey will be approximately 30KM’s, so it’s a bit of a long walking day.

As I left Baiona, I was led through the quaint older part of town with its stone streets and old buildings. It really feels like you’ve been take back in time. Baiona is a city I’d love to return to and spend more time in the future.

Baiona
The region is known for its seafood. Specifically octopus and lobster. These guys were displayed in a restaurant window.

Nothing was open in town at the time I was leaving, so I had to wait until I ventured a bit further to find me a good cafe and something to eat.

I hit the coast quickly and took my morning selfie. Or as I call it, “proof of life”. 😉 Look at this beach behind me. How can you not just want to kick off your shoes and stay?
The beaches here are so white and clean.

It wasn’t too long before I came across a cafe who served coffee and churros. Churros originated in Spain. They were as delicious as the cafe con leite .

Stopping for breakfast. Churros and Cafe Con Leite.
Sometimes when you can’t find an arrow this is exactly what crosses your mind… “now what”. It made me laugh.

The weather was beautiful today. Sunny, clear skies, with a nice breeze. Today the trail would lead back and forth between beachfront towns, beaches (including a nude beach) and a couple of riverfront towns. I definitely enjoyed the entire hike today.

Beautiful coastal town of Nigrán. This promenade through the town was exceptionally lovely.
Took my lunch break on this beach today.

As I approached Vigo, after a pretty long day of walking, the coastline adjacent to the city was incredibly beautiful. Vigo is a very large city and is one of the major ports in Spains Galicia region. The port was developed in the 16th century, and Felipe IV of Spain had the Vigo castle and defensive walls built to protect the city from attacks.

My thoughts: It was nice walking alone today. Not that I don’t enjoy my hiking buddies. I also met other pilgrims along the way from various areas of the world. I was able to take in the scenery in a more personal way, and spent some time taking a break on a beach today. I also listened to a lot of music to motivate my way. As always, I’m super appreciative to be able to walk this journey. Feeling strong and motivated!

Must be wonderful to breathe that fresh ocean air. The water looks so serene! And thanks for the continued history. Why do so many pilgrims miss the first half of the walk you did when you saw no one? Happy Walking!
